We've been asked a few times by our customers what they should do if they're playing a course that restricts phone use on the course, or even if they simply leave their phone in the car.
Sure, if you use Wasted Shots realtime, you'll get more insights into your round, but if given the choice between realtime insights and not playing, go play. Just make sure you have a scorecard on hand... or two if you're keeping score for a group.
Keeping score manually with our method is simple. You'll need 4 rows of the scorecard to match what the app asks you (technically the app asks you 5 questions per hole, but the scorecard already has "par" on it). In those 4 rows, write the following where you'd normally write player names:
Approach - 100 (or if your approach range is different, say 40 yards, "Approach - 40")
Short Putts - 3 (or if your approach range is different, say 6 feet, "Short Putts - 6")
Putts
Score
The number is a helpful reminder of what you're shooting for.
For each hole:
If you are not within your approach range in regulation (1 shot on par 3s, 2 shots on par 4s, 3 shots on par 5s), mark an "X" for that hole's approach row.
If you are successful, but didn't hit the green in regulation, put a checkmark in the approach spot.
If you hit the green, put a "+" or a circled checkmark or a "G" for approach.
Enter the number of putts you hit within your short putt range. You're hoping for 0 or 1.
Enter the number of total putts for that hole. It's up to you whether you count putts from off the green, but we tend to count them. You're hoping for 1 or 2.
Enter your score. Avoid those doubles!
After the round, login to app.wastedshots.com, click the "Play" link, then click on the New Round tile.
Above the scorecard, there are two buttons of interest - "Enter by Hole" or "Enter by Stat Type". We've found that "Enter by Stat Type" works best when playing this way. Mentally it's easier to enter all the pars, then all the approaches, then all short putts, etc.
Be sure to read the insights after saving your round, and check out the Learn page to look at how your rounds add up.
And next time, don't forget your phone. :-)
